Hireability Index: Build the Career Foundations That Set You Apart

Read Time: 2 mins

Why Hireability Matters in Your Career

Early to mid-career is one of the most important stages in shaping long-term success. This is when you establish your reputation, develop in-demand skills, and build the relationships that open doors to future opportunities.

But knowing where to focus your efforts can be challenging. Should you spend more time building your network? Strengthening your personal brand? Or learning new skills? The Hireability Index helps you answer these questions with clarity.

This tool gives you a structured, evidence-based way to understand where you’re already strong and where targeted effort could have the biggest impact. By taking stock of where you are now, you can make informed choices about where to go next.

What Is the Hireability Index?

The Hireability Index is a self-assessment designed to help you reflect on the key factors that make you visible, credible and ready for career opportunities. It covers five core areas:

  • Connecting with Others: Building and maintaining professional relationships that matter.
  • Personal Brand: Presenting your skills and expertise consistently online and offline.
  • Skills and Continuous Learning: Keeping your capabilities relevant and future-ready.
  • Achievements and Results: Demonstrating tangible impact in your role and career.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Collaborating, communicating and leading effectively.

Each section includes statements for you to rate on a scale from 1 (not at all yet) to 3 (regularly). This creates a snapshot of your current activity and focus areas.

Who Is It For?

The Hireability Index is designed for early to mid-career professionals who:

  • Want to take ownership of their career development.
  • Are ready to move beyond “just doing the job” to actively shaping their career trajectory.
  • Need a clear picture of their strengths and where to focus for growth.
  • Are considering coaching to accelerate their progress.

Research shows that individuals who invest in building their employability early in their careers enjoy greater career mobility, higher earning potential, and more confidence in navigating change.

How to Use the Hireability Index

  1. Complete the self-assessment by rating each statement honestly.
  2. Reflect on your strengths – the areas where you scored highest are what you can leverage right now.
  3. Identify 1–2 focus areas where small, consistent action could make a significant difference.
  4. Take action – on your own or with support from a coach – to build momentum and results.

This process is not about passing or failing; it’s about clarity and direction. By identifying where you’re already strong and where you can grow, you take control of your career path rather than leaving it to chance.
