Mental Health Care Plans

Support for Work-Related Mental Health Issues

Work can be a major source of stress, and it is not uncommon for people to experience anxiety, low mood, or burnout when workplace demands and personal wellbeing feel out of balance. If these difficulties are affecting your performance, motivation, or overall wellbeing, you may be eligible for support through a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP).

As a registered psychologist, I now provide psychological treatment under Medicare for people referred with a Mental Health Care Plan.

What Is a Mental Health Care Plan?

A Mental Health Care Plan is developed with your GP if you are diagnosed with a mental health condition, such as anxiety or work-related stress. It outlines:

  • The treatment options available to you
  • The support services you can access
  • The goals you and your doctor agree to work toward

With a plan in place, you can access Medicare rebates for psychological sessions with a registered psychologist.

How Does It Work?

  • Referral: Your GP will assess your situation, usually through a longer consultation, and decide whether a Mental Health Care Plan is appropriate.
  • Sessions: Initially, you can access up to 6 sessions, with the option of additional sessions after review (up to 10 per calendar year).
  • Rebate: Medicare currently reimburses a $98.95 per session (from 1 July 2025), helping reduce the cost of accessing professional support.

Why Consider a Mental Health Care Plan?

For many professionals, the workplace is where stress and mental health challenges become visible. A Mental Health Care Plan can help you:

  • Access structured, evidence-based support for work-related stress, anxiety or burnout
  • Gain practical strategies to manage challenges that affect your performance, motivation, and confidence
  • Improve your sense of control, balance, and wellbeing in your career

Am I Eligible?

You may be eligible if:

  • You are experiencing a diagnosable mental health condition (such as anxiety, depression, stress or adjustment difficulties)
  • Your GP believes psychological treatment would be beneficial
  • You are referred with a valid Mental Health Care Plan

Getting Started

If you believe a Mental Health Care Plan may be right for you:

  1. Book a longer consultation with your GP and let them know you would like to discuss a Mental Health Care Plan.
  2. Your GP will complete the assessment and, if appropriate, provide a referral.
  3. Contact me with your referral, and we can arrange your first session.
