Read Time: < 1 min

Want to beat impostor syndrome? A common challenge that pops up with high performers is the impostor phenomenon. It’s worth discussing because it can hold you back from achieving your career goals and contribute to burnout. And it is surprisingly prevalent. Up to 82% of people will experience it during their lifetime. So why not address it?

This American Psychological Association article draws on *new research* to help deal with the sense you haven’t earned what you’ve achieved. For those short on time, I’ve included some key points below.

✅ Impostor syndrome is common among both men and women and across various age groups (adolescents to late-stage professionals).
✅ Impostor experiences lie on a spectrum. Some impostor feelings can fuel high achievement; however, too much can interfere with your performance at work.
✅ It can interfere with building relationships and taking risks at work.

Try this:
✅ Build external, concrete reminders of your successes and strengths.
✅ Review whether the bar or standards you’ve set for yourself are realistic.
✅ Boost your self-compassion.
✅ Accept that imposter feelings may pop up from time to time when faced with new experiences or roles.
✅ Have a strategy to address impostor thoughts and feelings when they arise.
